Instruments

Young’s instruments facilitate music in unusual tunings, the use of resonant found objects, and the integration of music with environmental sound.

  • Columbine

The Columbine, a 61-note percussion instrument, has a 23-pitch scale based in just tuning. Young’s notation for the Columbine uses shaped and coloured noteheads as seen on the instrument.

  • Amaranth

The Amaranth includes 21 steel strings and 3 double-bass strings. Pitch is set by guitar tuning pegs and by positions of the triangular wooden bridges seen in the image.

  • Allium

The Allium is 9 strings attached to aluminum supports. Three bridges slide along each support, permitting a total of 18 notes. As there is no resonator sounds are heard through microphones and speakers.

  • Lithophone

The lithophone, a collection of resonant stones activating the strings of the Amaranth. They can also be played by percussion mallets and hex.

  • Tuned Resonators

A listener places one end of the resonator near an ear, the other towards an environmental sound. The length of each resonator imparts the fundamental pitch and overtones of the sound. Many of Young’s compositions featured recordings made through resonators. The resonators bring distant sounds such as flowing water closer to the ear, as well as imparting tuning to environmental sound.
